Need Experienced Mom Help

My kid is playing sick again. I just don't know what to do.

She's 16. She refuses to go to the doctor or school today. I know she is clearly NOT sick. We went to an Ear, Nose, and Throat doctor yesterday to check on her tonsils. They're HUGE, but fine.

She really was sick last week, but this is just plain laziness, avoidance, something...I am stuck.

All I have is if she's sick, she's not hanging out with friends or driving or having any kind of teenage life. She'll go for that on the day she plays sick, but, I told her she clearly isn't getting better and I have decided this weekend (homecoming weekend) is going to have to be one of rest and relaxation to "get well." It's obvious that she can make it to school, but after hanging out with her friends after school, she relapses and is too ill to get up and go to school, sooooooooo.....

we have to reverse things. She'll just have to go to school, come home and stay put so she can have enough energy to go to school again.

Anyway, we can't MAKE her get up, go, or anything...she's so stubborn, and it's more than I know how to clearly handle.

I plan on calling her counselor or prinicipal...maybe get a conference. We're just stumped.

Help! What would you do?

You may be correct in talking to the counselor and principal. I hesitate to say it, but can you say something like: no school, no car? No school, no cell phone?
Best wishes and good luck. I don't know anything about parenting, my beagle runs my house...

Obviously not a mom here, but I like the idea that until she gets "better" it's only school, nothing else in order to "save all her energy for school." Hopefully she'll get "better" very quickly!

Is there something going on at school? Did something happen to upset her? Try to get to the bottom of it. Make sure nothing serious is going on other than just not wanting to attend school.

If it's sheer, Not wanting to go, then by all means don't let her have any privileges.

Also, I'd make sure to get all her work from school and she'd be doing it to keep up.

I wouldn't let her have a free ride.

All of the above -

Talk to the principal or a counselor... see if you can find out from any teachers if anything has gone on.

Get all the work she's missing and have her work on it. No tv.. nothing but resting and homework if she's too sick to go to school.

I agree...meeting with counselors, and teachers.

And try a heart to heart with her too. Call her bluff. I do this all the time with my nephews...most of the time they give in and open up :)

Good luck!

Not an experienced parent, so I don't have any input. But, I did want to thank you for stopping by my blog today. I hope you get your daughter back on track soon! Good luck!!

I would talk to some of her friends. Maybe they would tell you what if anything is going on. I always told my kids if they were to sick to attend school then they were too sick to do anything else. I remember I myself had a fight with a girl in one of my classes and didn't go to school for two weeks.

Taking away HC weekend is a good start. No social life might perk her up immediately. Another carrot, to dangle or take away, is the car. A week of Mom and/or Dad driving her to school and picking her up might make her bright-eyed and bushy-tailed and ready to go to school, too. And a conference with her counselor is a good thing, too. Do you know if there's something/someone at school whom she might be avoiding? Will she talk to you about her social life? Good luck!
